I posed a question to my class today: Can you think of any career/industry that does not make use of computers on some level?
In today's world, that answer would have to be no. Of course, there are some jobs (landscaping, framing to name a couple) where some of the production workers aren't using computers as a part of their daily job. However, there is not a job or industry that doesn't involve computers and technology on some level. The landscaping company probably uses computers for financial records, tracking customers and employees and probably advertising purposes. I told a story in class today of a professional baseball player I knew who used a computer to track what pitches pitchers were throwing him as a way of gaining a competitive edge on them (and this was over 15 years ago).
So, not only are computers a part of everyday life, but they will continue to be a major part of the business world. The jobs that are being created as a part of the new economy in this country are skilled jobs, often service-oriented jobs. Knowledge and value are keys to these jobs and as a result, so are computers and information systems. Products and jobs based upon commodities don't hold much future- they're all going overseas to the lowest-cost producer.
This is one of my major objectives in teaching 2223- helping students to acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to be successful in today's knowledge and information based economy. So whether someone comes in at a high skill level or knowing very little, my goal is to have them leave with what they need in computer skills for their career.

It is true. In today's society the need for computers are very much in demand. It seems that you cannot get a job practically anywhere without having some knowledge in the usage of a computer. Even at places like McDonald's you have to use a computer to take orders, and to keep track of the hours worked by the many employees, only to name a few. The demand for computers in the workplace an in everyday life will only increase and become more complicated as the years go by, and technology keeps on increasing.
In the modern United States computers are used in almost every job you come across. Can you imagine a life without computers? I mean no more aol, e-mail, or facebook, how are you going to keep up with friends and family. Not to mention one of the most widely used computers, a cell phone, which few American's are without. Computers have made the hardest work so simple by allowing users to obtain basic knowledge on computer programs and applying it to jobs, school, etc. Users can access a computer program, plug in information, and the computer does all the work by configuring the instructions given by the user and program. Basically, computers make modern life easier on people by organizing, processing, and producing data that would have taken years to interpret without computers.
Computers are what run our everyday lives. It seems as if the worlds computers shut down our life as we know it would be in termol. From stop lights to electricity our whole world is run and regulated by computers. Without computers common everyday task would seem much more difficult and uneasy to preform. This why our knowledge of computers is not only important in the work field but also out everyday life.
I agree that computers are an evident part of our future and believe that going into the business world without even the basic knowledge of computers then you will find it very hard to find a job. Every aspect of the business world is affected by computer tedchnology from transactions, forms of inventory, and also to keep track of customers.
I think that it is pretty incredible that a pro baseball player used a computer over 15 years ago to track the pitches that were being thrown by pitchers. That just comes to show how much computers will play a part in the business world in the future and it's kind of scary if you think about it. Pretty soon computers will be used to run certain jobs without the need of an employee to work it.
In today's society there is no escaping computers. Having knowlegde of computers can help you advance in society. For exapmle, a better paying job. But the use of computers and technology advancement have made people laid back. You dont have to work extra hard for anything. For example, you dont have to do thorough research in encyclopedia's, because now you can just google or use some type of search engine. You dont have to write letters to your significant other because now you can call, text, or e-mail them. It has overall made society very accessible. But my question is: What would happen to society if all technology just came crashing down? What would we do as an alternative?
Technology has made a way for alot of communication via e-mail, buying things on the internet, etc. It has just made life that much easier because everything is done faster. I think that it is good to be computer literate because the world is becoming more advanced everyday!!
Yes, luckily for the human race, almost evrything we do has been simplified in some way via computers. Mr. James Orr wrote in his blogg on this topic that landscaping is probably the career that uses computers the least on a daily bases. Not true; My major is construction management which incoorporates landscaping. Landscapers use "transit levels" which are computers for measuring angles and slopes of land. I do feel sometimes that we depend on computers a little too much. We put much trust in computers as well. Maybe I just watch "too much T.V." or looked into movies like I-Robot and Terminator a little too deep. Possibilities still exist for computer failures, blackouts, and identity theft. But I'm not complaining, I enjoy all of the convienences that computer technology offers us and I intend to enjoy the ones to come.
in todays world just about everything envolves computers. its almost scary because you never no what there going to do next. i also find it amazing how you start to see more of the older generation learning how to use computers for part and full time jobs. what will they come out with next??
Almost all jobs use computers in some way, shape or form. Radiology is a great example. Over the past few years radiology has taken huge steps to go completly paperless. Even x-ray films are done digitally now. My dad is a radiologist and he now has five computers in his room, where as before, say a couple of years ago he maybe had one. Two of these computers have huge 30" screens that he reads ct or mri scans on. He now uses computers in his office to compile a complete 3-D image of the patient. Everymorning he reads films that are e-mailed from Australia! When he is on call on weekends, instead of going to the hospital at 2 a.m when there has been a wreck, he now has a computer at his house that is linked to one at the hospital and he can read and diagnose the patient without ever leaving his house! Medicine is just one field were computer technology has helped it take huge strides.
